Alum Quarry and Shale Spoil Heaps

Uploader's Comments

Looking north and down at the quarry and shale spoil heaps. After the shale had been quarried and then processed to extract the aluminium sulphate the shale that was left was either disposed of nearby to form enormous shale tips as in the photo or thrown in to the sea. This photo was taken in the third week of July 2013. In this view the village of Runswick Bay can also be seen in the distance
