Birkby Colliery conical spoil tip 600m west of Rose Gill Mill

A Scheduled Monument in Crosscanonby, Cumbria

Birkby 'Bing' 1977

Uploader's Comments

Taken back in 1977, before the trees grew enough to make this viewpoint impossible today. Much erosion of the spoil heap has taken place, especially along the Eastern side and it is now very unstable. I often walked to the top of the 'Bing' (as it's known locally) when I was younger, but I wouldn't like to do it today, knowing how much it has deteriorated in the ensuing years.
