Wayside cross base on south side of the churchyard wall at Scawton

A Scheduled Monument in Old Byland and Scawton, North Yorkshire

Scawton Cross Base

Uploader's Comments

This photo taken in December 2011 shows the medieval base slowly being covered by vegetation lying beside the churchyard wall. The cross will have probably originally stood in the centre of the village. It was more than likely erected at the same time as the church was built in 1146 AD by the monks of Byland Abbey.Part of the shaft of the cross has been used as a step in the nearby farmhouse.
