Standing cross in churchyard of St Gregory's Church at Cropton

A Scheduled Monument in Cropton, North Yorkshire

Cropton Cross

Uploader's Comments

This is both a churchyard cross marking the site of a tomb for five people and a wayfarer cross. The original cross had a cup in the head of the shaft in which to leave a coin for needy travelers. There is a rhyme which relates to this "On Cropton Cross there is a cup,And in that cup there is a sup,Take that cup and drink that sup,And put the cup on Cropton Cross".
