Description

The monument comprises a standing stone of prehistoric date. It is being rescheduled to clarify the extent of the scheduled area and to ensure that the whole of the most archaeologically sensitive area is covered.

The stone stands on a locally prominent knoll in arable farmland at around 50m OD. It comprises a standing stone aligned approximately E-W, measuring about 1.6m high and about 0.9m thick. Standing stones such as this date to the Neolithic or Bronze Age periods and formed the focus for prehistoric ritual practices.

A large red sandstone sundial, probably of 19th century date, has been added to the top of the stone.

The area proposed for scheduling comprises the stone and an area around it within which related material may be expected to be found. It is circular with a diameter of 25m, centred on the stone itself, as marked in red on the accompanying map extract.
