Description

The monument consists of a souterrain, filled in many years ago, but with masonry surviving underground. The souterrain was discovered

when an earthen mound, about 7.5m in diameter and 2m high, was being cleared away. This mound may have been the remains of a hut circle.

The souterrain was entered by a flight of 6 steps leading into a

covered passage. The passage was 6.7m long, about 1m wide and 1.4m

high. The sides were built of boulders and the roof flagged. Within

the souterrain were found a human arm bone, and parts of 3 querns. A slight mound now marks the site of the souterrain and possible hut circle.

The area to be scheduled measures 40m in diameter, to include the souterrain, hut circle and an area around in which traces of

activities associated with the construction and use of the souterrain may survive, as shown in red on the attached map.
