The monument comprises a group of prehistoric monuments set close together on a terrace to the S of the Kinbrace Burn. Of these, the chambered cairn is already scheduled, but this extension adds the nearby burnt mound, hut circle and field system, as well as extending the protected area around the cairn.
The chambered cairn has been about 20m N-S by 23m E-W, with projecting 'horns' at NE and NW corners. It still stands over 2m high. The entrance has been from the E, and the burial chamber is 2.8m by 1.7m, with corbelling still showing at the top of the chamber walls. Turf and stone bothies have been built into the top and flanks of the cairn at a relatively recent date. To the WSW of the cairn, about 45m away, is a substantial mound of burnt stone with a hollow centre. The mound is about 11m across and 1.2m high. Running across the hillside from the burnt mound and past the cairn is a scatter of low cairns and stretches of walling which represent a prehistoric field system, probably associated with a hut circle set within a small oval enclosure which lies 55m ENE from the cairn. The enclosure is oval, 20m N-S by 18m, with its entrance facing N. The hut circle, 7.5m across, appears to overlie the enclosure's E bank.
These remains appear to represent a sequence of use of the hillside: first the chambered cairn, followed perhaps by the enclosure and field system, with the hut circle and burnt mound following. The cairn is likely to be of Neolithic date, the rest of the remains Bronze Age. The bothies and some other more recent walling around the cairn are most probably no older than the 19th century AD.
The area now to be scheduled is a rectangle aligned WSW-ENE and measuring about 140m by 100m, to include the cairn, burnt mound, enclosure, hut circle and field system, plus an area around these in which evidence relating to their construction and use is likely to survive. The area is indicated in red on the accompanying map extract.
