Description

The monument is a Mesolithic-period and later occupation site located in a rock face close to the coast.

Part of the site has been excavated but the rest remains in situ. The cultural deposits which were excavated included a Mesolithic shell midden dating to around 7500 years ago. This contained cultural material, including bone and stone tools and the remains of animals. Upper layers produced an Iron Age object and evidence of nineteenth-century occupation.

The area to be scheduled measures 60m NW-SE by 30m SW-NE, to include the surviving part of the shell midden and an area around it in which traces of activities associated with the use of the site may survive, as shown in red on the accompanying map extract.
