The monument is of national importance as a well preserved, probably prehistoric enclosure, a rare survival in an otherwise improved landscape, which has the potential to enhance considerably our understanding of the history of settlement in the area. The monument is of particular importance because of the survival of the rectangular building, which may be of Dark Age date.
