Description

The monument comprises a prehistoric platform, presumed to be the base for a house structure, and a large and diverse range of small cleitan (small drystone buildings used for storage). It also includes the Lover's Stone, where St Kildan men traditionally demonstrated their bravery and prowess as fowlers to the women.

The monument was first scheduled in 1972, but an inadequate area was included to protect all of the archaeological remains: the present rescheduling rectifies this.

The remains described are located immediately SE of the summit of Claigeann an Tigh Faire, extending SE between the cliff edge and the dyke at the top of Gleann Mor.

The area to be scheduled is irregular on plan, and measures c.350m from NW to SE by 75m transversely, as marked on the attached map. It includes the remains described and an area around them within which related material may be expected to survive.
