Description

The monument comprises the remains of an unenclosed settlement of prehistoric date, visible as by cropmarks on oblique aerial photographs. The monument lies in gently sloping and south facing arable farmland at around 105m above sea level.

The scheduled area contains at least six roundhouses represented by dark circular cropmarks, measuring up to 15m in diameter. There is a seventh cropmark recorded, at the north of the site, sub-oval on plan and smaller than the other features. This could be another form of enclosure rather than a roundhouse. Roundhouses were domestic dwellings and generally date to the Iron Age. The collection of cropmark features at this site represents the remains of an unenclosed settlement.

The scheduled area is irregular, extending up to 15 metres from the outer edges of the cropmarks (based on transcription data). It includes the remains described above and an area around within which evidence relating to the monument's construction, use and abandonment is expected to survive, as shown in red on the accompanying map.

The monument is of national importance because of its potential to contribute to our understanding of prehistoric settlement and economy. Its importance is enhanced by its proximity to sites of potentially contemporary date.
